Masters Kitchen and Cocktail is among the finest restaurants in Oceanside, California. Located on Pacific Coast Highway three blocks south of downtown Oceanside, the restaurant made its home in the old Masters machine shop originally founded in 1952. With the beautiful, original wood beam ceiling and brick walls uncovered, Masters is a unique mix of old-meets-new.
John's colorful 100' x 28' mural on the building's south wall is a whimsical tribute to early twentieth century bootleggers and their Rube Golberg-style moonshine-still, set in an imaginary Oceanside past. A Model-T flatbed truck is loaded with the prime booty of a hard week's work and protected by a shotgun yielding 'shiner and his beach-billy compatriots.
To differentiate them from their moonshining brethren in the hills of Kentucky, "the Masters boys" are playing ukeleles and bongos (instead of banjos and jaw harps), while wearing aloha shirts and flip-flops.
Rounding out the narrative, period redwood longboards lean against the moonshine shack, calling to the beachbillies for a much needed dunk in the ocean with a tasty south swell.
